The average density of granite is 2.75gm/cubic cm, with a range of 1.74 to 2.80 gm/cubic cm. Granite is composed of many minerals, the chief being feldspar, mica and quartz. Granites greatly vary in color, depending on their chemistry and mineralogy. Granites are massive, hard and tough and hence they are used widely as a construction stone. Granite has been extensively used as a dimension stone and as flooring tiles in public and commercial buildings and monuments. With increasing amounts of acid rain in parts of the world, granite has begun to supplant marble as a monument material, since it is much more durable. Polished granite has been a popular choice for kitchen countertops due to its high durability and aesthetic qualities. Granite FinishesPolished...The color, depth and crystal structure of the stone is entirely visible in this reflective, mirror gloss finish. Due to the high level of polish, the surface pores are almost totally sealed, leading to high levels of resistance from the weather and other chemicals. Honed...Nearly the same as the polished counterpart, minus the reflectivity. This finish shows the full color of the stone and presents a smooth satin surface. Flamed...This finish is brought about by applying a high temperature flame to the stone surface. The flame fractures crystals on the face, giving the granite a rough texture finish.
